The second variation is based off the left side of the vehicle making contact with a smaller object. An object of example would be a tree or pole. They call that the driver-side small overlap test. Last of the frontal crashes is the passenger- side small overlap test. This test is being ran because when manufacturers tried to improve safety features to the vehicle they didn’t translate to the passenger side in testing. Therefore, why they also test the passenger side for reaction of airbags, seatbelt, etc.

For side crashes two barriers are used. The roof strength test is a pre-caution for any rollover accidents. Evidently the roof is determined by pushing an angled metal plate down on one side of the roof, measuring the force required to crush the roof.
