An electric vehicle that uses a fuel cell, sometimes in combination with a small battery to power its onboard electric motor. To illustrate, fuel cells in vehicles generate electricity using oxygen from the air and compressed hydrogen. As a result, most fuel cell vehicles are classified as zero-emissions vehicles because they emit only water and heat.

2023 Prius Prime & Rav4 Prime

2023 Mirai

This elegant passenger car utilizes fuel cell technology to generate power to an electric motor. You fill up the fuel tank like you normally would but instead of gasoline, the Mirai is filled with hydrogen. From there the fuel tank and air entering from the intake grille meet in the Fuel Cell Stack. There, a chemical reaction involving the oxygen in the air and hydrogen creates electricity—powering Mirai. In the end, the only by-product emitted is water. This model is currently only available to California residents.
